From Backup to BAFTA

Sophie Willan is the brand new Patron of Backup North West Charity at the start of its 30th anniversary. 2022 sees 30 years of operation in Bolton, providing temporary accommodation, support, education and hope to young adults, often still teenagers, who find themselves homeless.

Backup North West based in Bolton and they have accommodated thousands of young people aged 16-25 over the years including the super talented Sophie Willan, actress, writer, comedienne and star of BBCs’ Alma’s Not Normal. She’s gone from Backup to a BAFTA, which she won for the hit series pilot show in 2021.

Backup previously known as Bolton Young Persons Housing Scheme supported Sophie when she needed temporary accommodation as a teenager in Bolton.  In recent years the charity has been able to work in partnership with her on projects where she has supported other young homeless and those leaving care, in particular. Sophie has now agreed to be a Patron for the charity.

Maura Jackson CEO at Backup said “We are thrilled to have Sophies’ support. She is a diamond and a great example of what can happen when you are determined, tenacious, work hard, have a vision and are willing to assist others along your way; regardless of the barriers or challenges you face personally. She deserves every award and recognition for her work, she is amazing. To stand up and put your name behind Backup is (in Almas words) simply fab-u-lous.”

Our Events

Every year Backup delivers multiple events for fundraising. Each one is designed to raise awareness and much needed money to support young people who are homeless. Annually we have our core events; Gala Ball, Golf Day and Ladies Lunch. We also have other events that are different each year so that we can have a wider appeal to all.
